Considering I'm not exactly outdoorsy, not exactly an animal person, and not exactly a fan of dirt or sweat, I guess this it's a little strange that my very favorite place to take the children is a farm. I used to chalk this up to some hidden desire to compensate for the city-rearing they're getting or a natural yearning for fresh air and open spaces, but I've realized I like taking my children to see animals at the farm because I like seeing my children see animals at the farm.
For me, the whole experience is in their faces.
In their questions and discoveries.
In their sense of wonder at the world beyond them.
And that kind of thing is contagious. It makes a not very outdoorsy, not very animal-y, not very sweaty or dirty type person start to look around. To breathe a little more deeply. To fret a little less about a dust on her jeans or straw in her hair.
