Runaway

One of the fun things about being home for a visit is coming across gems like this one:

"Dear Parents/ I have ran away/ Bettie Boyd"

Bettie Boyd...that's me. Or was me. Up until the first day of second grade, when I decided I'd had enough of the boys at school calling me "Bettie Boy" and officially announced that I would thereafter answer only to my given name of Elizabeth. Pretty much everyone but my brothers went along with the change. But I'm still Bettie Boyd in some parts.

And lest you think I had some grievance worthy of causing me to run away, please know that running away was an activity I enjoyed frequently. Usually, I'd pack a jar of peanut butter and a sleeve of Saltines and go hide out at the top of the slide on the playground across the street until I got bored or the dinner bell rang (literally...we had a dinner bell...how fun is that?!). One time, I remember asking Daddy to give me some money to run away. He declined.

No, parents who keep a note like this in their fireproof lock box all these years don't deserve a runaway!

I don't think I'll ever forget the story... "Bettie Boyd, Bettie Boyd, are you a boy or a girl?" :)
